Just before the municipal elections, the politics on naming roads to parks has started. In this episode, the northern corporation has recently changed the names of over 40 public places in the capital.

MCD has included freedom fighters in the list of new names. It has included the names of various personalities including Bhagat Singh, Udham Singh and Subhash Chandra Bose, BR Ambedkar and Maharishi Valmiki.

The corporation has recently changed the names of many public places including Chandni Chowk to Civil Lines and Pitampura to Shalimar Bagh. The personalities and leaders after whom the streets, parks and squares have been named include Sir Chhotu Ram, Gurjar Raja Mihir Bhoj and Sikh spiritual leader Guru Gobind Singh.

Proposal For Name Change

The mayor of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation withdrew the proposal to change the name of Hauz Qazi. He took the decision of withdrawing the proposal after facing opposition from people on social media.

According to the proposal of the AAP councillor, this place was to be named Hari Chand Verma Chowk. A notification issued by the deputy commissioner on March 9 said that it has been informed to the people that the mayor has withdrawn the advance approval of the proposal to rename the Chowk with immediate effect. The proposal to change the name faced a sharp backlash from many on social media.

The residents of Chawri Bazar and Lal Kuan had expressed their concern about the proposal made by the mayor. BJP’s Praveen Shankar Kapoor also opposed the move.

He said that it had come to his notice that on the proposal of councillor Rakesh Kumar, advance approval has been given to renaming the historic Hauz Qazi of Old Delhi as Hari Chand Verma Chowk, which he strongly opposes. He said that Hauz Qazi is a historical name and names cannot be changed as per law.

Three Corporations Pass All Proposals

Three corporations have passed all the resolutions on Wednesday amid the uproar. On the last day, there was a meeting of the North and South Corporations of the House and the standing committee meeting of the Eastern Corporation.

Due to the uproar over the name change, the meeting of the Northern Corporation lasted only forty-five minutes. The meeting of the Corporation had to be stopped midway. The mayor tried to start the discussion again, but the opposition staged a walkout.

The Northern Corporation called a meeting of the House at 9 AM in the morning amid discussions about the announcement of the date of the MCD election. In the meeting, the ruling party started a discussion on the liquor policy, which was opposed by the councillors of AAP.

On the other hand, Congress councillors sat on a dharna demanding a discussion on the issue of DBC personnel. But the side remained adamant on discussing the question of liquor policy. AAP councillors tore pamphlets and threw them in the air and started shouting slogans in front of the mayor.
